Generation No. 1

1. ELIJAH1 WHITEHEAD1 was born 18231, and died 18871. He married SARAH1. She was born 18311.

Notes for ELIJAH WHITEHEAD:

Elijah Whitehead was born in 1823. He was a slave. In1868 he bought 40 acres of land from an African American family named Ellington. The Ellington's had acquired the land as a land grant from the Federal government after the Civil War. This land became the Whitehead Home site. Elijah and his wife Sarah worked this land with their children.

Henry

Isabelle Amanda

Records and Deeds/Conveyances 1878-79 Elijah Whitehead mortgaged his crops to a white land broker named Swann Ellington on January 18, 1879. the promissory note read "I promise to pay Swann Ellington $50.00 for the advance of making a crop and for farming tools, whereas, should I forfeit, I will give up possession of my property, including all of the cotton, cottonseed, corn, fodder, peas, syrup, a one horse wagon and a mule named Brandy. After 10 days notice to sell to the highest bidder for cash after paying all costs of advertising, sellers to take his part and give the balance to me." This was an entrapment, for usually there would not be anything left after the white land owner took his share. At present, the 40 acres is still owned by the African American Whitehead Family.

When Elijah died in 1887, Sarah divided the land between the children and herself. Each getting 1/4 interest. [Whitehead.FTW]

Notes for SARAH:

Sarah Whitehead was born in 1831, she was reared in the (white) Whitehead Family home. She had been a personal in house slave to Catherine Whitehead until her death. Because of her exposure to the in house white ways. It was unfortunate to be a slave but by working in the house it enriched her knowledge about culture and other things. Sarah was a very strong and determined. She set the moral/ethical tone of the Whitehead Family (African American).

She and Elijah had three children

Henry

Amanda

Isabelle

The forty acres of land that was purchased by Elijah and Sarah was bought from Wyley and Eady Ellington (African Americans) in 1868. The Ellington's had acquired the land as a land grant from the Federal Government, after the Civil War. On January 29, 1905, Sarah Whitehead mortgaged her share (1/4 interest) of the 40 acres to her grandson Will Whitehead. May 25th of 1905, Henry (her son) sold his 1/4 acres to Will Whitehead for $150.00. As the years passed and Sarah grew older, her granddaughter Sarah Jane (named for her grandmother) had a house built across the road from the home house for Grandmother Sarah. Grandmother Sarah was like a mighty oak tree that furnished the growth and strength to the limbs and the branches of the African American Whitehead Family. The land is still in the Whitehead Family (African American) [Whitehead.FTW]

Susie the sixth child of Joe and Susie Whitehead.  Unlike my other sibling I did not move to New York after graduation.  I moved to Arkansas.  I was hired by one of the largest grocery chain stores who had a training center in Arkansas.  Only spent six months there then moved on to Virginia and years later to California.  The rest is history.
